What is a Baccarat Shoe in Baccarat?

📅 April 2025⏱ 5 min read🎯 Guide

If you're new to baccarat, you may have heard the term 'shoe' but aren't sure what it means. Understanding the shoe is fundamental to understanding how the game works and why tracking matters.

What is a Shoe?

A baccarat shoe is the dealing device — a plastic box that holds multiple decks of cards and allows the dealer to slide them out one at a time. The shoe holds the cards for an entire 'round' of play until it's shuffled again.

How Many Decks in a Baccarat Shoe?

Standard baccarat uses 8 decks of cards shuffled together in the shoe. Some casinos use 6 decks, and occasionally 1 deck mini-baccarat. The number of decks slightly affects the odds, but the difference is minimal.

How Many Hands in a Shoe?

With 8 decks (416 cards), a typical shoe produces approximately 70-80 hands before the cut card is reached and the shoe is shuffled. Some shoes run longer, some shorter.

Why Does the Shoe Matter for Strategy?

Pattern-based strategies like C2Bet4 and shoe bias tracking rely on the consistency of a single shoe. A 'Banker-biased shoe' means Banker has been winning more than expected in this particular shuffle.

This bias only lasts for the duration of the shoe — once shuffled, all previous patterns reset.
